History of Barangay Apopong

Barangay Apopong, Generala Santos City, was located along theNational Highway going to Marbel, Koronadal South Cotabato about 5 Kilometers away from the City proper. The word "Apopong" is a B'laan term, which means "Heart".

In 1954 when General Santos City is still the Municipality of Buayan, Apopong was named as Sitio New Society of Barangay Sinawal. It has a land area of 1,907 hectares or 3.56% of the total land of the entire city. Barangay Apopong is located in the north western side of the City of General Santos.

The first settlers in the area were the families of alilaya, Ibad, Pragados, Hernandes, Lapong, cabalit, Isidro, Villavende and Balatayo among others. In 1972, the settles grouped themselves and formed an organization. Which they called Muslim-Christian Asociation, Mr. Melchor Legaspi and Sammy Akmad came out to be thier president and vice-president, respectively. This association served as the bridges of the residents to the local government during the term of late Mayor Antonio C. Acharon. The said association initiated the separation of Sitio Apopong to the Barangay Sinawal. On December 9, 1976, the Sanguniang Bayan of General Santos City Favorable endorsed to the late President Ferdinand Marcos through the Department of local Government and Commission Development (DLGCD) a resolution no. 55A, Series of 1976, to proclaim the Sitio Apopong as Barangay Apopong of General Santos City.
